The RPG genre is known for storytelling, deep lore, complex characters, intricate mechanics, and allowing players to express themselves throughout the game. For those same reasons, it is a genre that can be taxing on development time and effort, as good RPGs require immense amounts of both to produce. That is why it’s difficult to find RPG games that are available to play for free. Difficult, but not impossible. With the rise of online gameplay and games-as-service over the years, the MMO genre (for example) has morphed in some ways to provide the experience of RPG gaming without the necessity of paying for it, instead providing the option to do so.
